Origin of Akzidenz Grotesk Font
This font was first named “Accidenz-Grotesk” The style was invented from Royal Grotesk light by royal type-cutter Ferdinand Theinhardt. A Berthold artistic director said that this typeface came from the Ferdinand Theinhardt-type Foundry.
The design of this font looks like a copy of a lettering “Schattierte Grotesk” which is a shaded Sans-Serif font printed by Bauer & Co. A font foundry of Stuttgart in 1896.
Afterward, the Theinhardt Foundry was combined with Berthold and provided Regular, Bold, and Medium styles. The light style of this typeface was proprietary distinctly as ‘Royal-Grotesk’. It seemingly was cut by Berthold about 1902-3.
